About Coastal Carolina University

Coastal Carolina University, also known as simply CCUI, is an independent, state-supported university in Conway, which is the county seat of Horry County, situated in the US state of South Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of more than 11 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Many of the city's buildings and structures are on the National Register of Historic Place, among them also being: the City Hall building, designed by Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument. Conway is mostly known for the fact that it is home of Coastal Carolina University.

CCUI was founded in 1954, by residents of Horry County, who formed the nonprofit Coastal Educational Foundation for the purpose of founding a college for the local community, in 6 months, the university first opening its doors to students as the Coastal Carolina Junior College, which became an independent university, and adopted its current name in 1993.

Today, Coastal Carolina University has an enrollment of more than 8000 students, offering educational programs in 51 major fields of study, including graduate programs in education, business administration (MBA) and coastal marine and wetland studies, the university also being home of the Scholars Academy, a high school program for gifted students.

Athletics

Coastal Carolina's athletic teams are known as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, who compete in NCAA Division I, as members of the Big South Conference, (including in in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly I-AA, for football) in 16 sports for men and women (8 each), including in baseball, basketball, softball, tennis, soccer, golf and volleyball. The Chanticleers are, perhaps, best known for their football team, which, in 2006, made history, by receiving its first FCS playoff berth, including the first playoff berth for the Big South Conference, losing a first-round contest to the Appalachian State Mountaineers, who would go on to win the FCS national championship that season.
